Exfoliation is an important step in your personal skincare routine, and facial exfoliation, in particular, can improve your skin’s appearance by ridding your face of dead skin cells and smoothing it out. Too much exfoliation, however, can be too harsh and worsen your skin. Understanding the proper way to exfoliate your skin–and understanding your skin type–is an important way to choose the best exfoliation option for you.
The Perks Of Exfoliation
Immediately after exfoliation results become apparent. By removing the top layer of dead skin cells from your skin and face, your skin can look brighter and feel smoother. Exfoliation can open pores and improve the effectiveness of topical skin treatments by allowing it to penetrate deeper after the top layer of skin is removed. Long-term benefits of exfoliation can include a boost in collagen production, which leads to younger-looking skin. Exfoliation is especially beneficial to those who have experienced premature fine lines and wrinkles due to UV exposure, and those who suffer from non-inflammatory acne like blackheads and whiteheads.
The 411 On Exfoliation
Your skin naturally renews itself approximately every 25 days until you reach the age of 30. Then the process slows down and can result in a duller complexion. Your skin renews itself approximately every 28 days, but as we age the process begins to slow. As the process slows down the result can be a duller complexion.
There are three types of exfoliants:
- Over-the-counter, manual or enzymatic exfoliants that can be used once or twice per week
- Chemical exfoliants, like peels that can be administered at a dermatologist’s office
- At home exfoliation devices, which can be used at home regularly and cautiously.
For best results, exfoliate at night before bed. Your skin renews itself overnight!
Learn your skin type.
Before you begin searching for exfoliation products, it’s important to know your skin. For oily skin, stronger treatments and exfoliation methods like electronic facial devices can be used. For those with dry or sensitive skin, you may want to go easier on the exfoliation options and use something with milder enzymes or gentle manual exfoliants that won’t cause irritation.
Don’t overdo it.
If you’re using an at-home exfoliation method or treatment that’s on the mild side, you may only need to do it once or twice per week. For more aggressive treatments and procedures, like chemical peels or microdermabrasion, exfoliating a few times at your dermatologist’s biweekly or monthly. Don’t forget to remain conscious of your skin type and how sensitive your skin may be regarding certain treatments.
Pay attention to products
Do your homework and research various methods of exfoliation and products you can use at home. Not all methods and treatments are safe or effective for every skin type. One thing you can do is make sure the products you’re considering purchasing come from recognized, reputable companies or outlets. If you’re buying over-the-counter, check the chemical ingredients for a low acid concentration. You don’t need more than 10 percent glycolic acid or two percent salicylic acid.
Ask your dermatologist
If you’re still unsure of the best way to proceed with adding exfoliation to your skincare routine, ask a board-certified dermatologist to help you choose a safe option that works best for your skin type. For the best and most reliable results, asking a dermatologist is the way to go.
Exfoliation is Effective
Exfoliating your skin helps remove the build up of daily dirt and makeup residue, which enhances your skin’s ability to absorb everything else. Moisturizers, toners, acne medication, and anti-aging serums can produce more effective results on freshly exfoliated skin. Just like we buff our nails before we apply polish, and sand walls before we paint them, exfoliation provides the proper surface to apply everything else your skin may need.

Can you believe it’s already fall? It’s surreal how time flies!
To us – it still feels like summer when the air is silky and we’re all channeling our inner Amazon queens, tanned, messy and gorgeous. Ah, good days. However, the fall is not that bad, either – with oranges and deep greens all around, the smell of roasted chestnuts in the streets and fabulous fashion – the opportunities to enjoy it are plenty.
Naturally, with this rapid season change, to look our absolute best, we need to change our summer beauty routine to the fall one. Luckily for all of us little beauty geeks, transitional skincare products are already on shelves in our favorite stores, and it’s time we did some shopping!
Here’s a list of the basic summer-to-fall essentials to purchase.
Unfortunately, after laying out on the beach for hours on end, your skin starts reflecting so much more than a tan; it gets dry and flaky and you need to employ a little bit of magic to protect it from damage the sun’s done. You need the water dried up from your skin to be quickly and deeply infused back in there, so look for a facial moisturizer made with retinol, beeswax, amino acids and rosemary extract for a fabulous hydrating effect. To restore skin’s natural glow and soften harsh lines, apply the cream under makeup and before bed.
A high-quality daily peel will do wonders for getting skin back to its pre-summer naturally radiant state. Choose powerful, yet gentle exfoliate acids to help improve the skin’s texture and diminish fine lines in the long run. In case you’ve never used a peel before, you’ll be blown away by its effect.
The Right Antioxidant
The skin needs constant protection against the environment; this is why you need to find a serum that will feel natural on your skin. A good serum will be the best antioxidant your skin can get. Opt for a product whose powerful combination of ingredients helps repair your skin and some former skin-scarring or damage. Used every day, the serum will result in a remarkable change in the skin.
A Profound Eye Cream
The eye area is very sensitive to all weather factors, sun especially. Find eye cream which instantly cools and depuffs the under eye area and gives your face its initial glow. The best under eye creams are those made with caffeine as they successfully reduce bags and puffiness. After a long summer or a night without enough sleep, a coffee-based eye cream mask is what you want to go with.
A Night Cream
To knock out dry skin cells and up the ante on collagen production, find a good night cream that will do the magic. Creams to look for are those made with ingredients like glycolic and salicylic acids as they achieve the best effect of chemical exfoliation. Formulas based on bearberry, horse chestnut and white tea soothe the skin to mow over wrinkles, fine lines and hyperpigmentation.
A fabulous Makeup Eraser
After a long, makeup free summer, you’ll start using makeup again and you will need a product, gentle enough to nurture your skin and yet successfully remove anything you’ve got going on your face. It doesn’t replace cleansing, yet it works to remove makeup. Go for gentle formulas that aren’t invasive on the skin but are strong enough to remove waterproof and long wearing makeup.
Ladies, don’t worry too much about this seasonal transition; if you stick to the right formulas and quality products, your skin will restore its initial glow and elasticity in a second. Good luck picking!

The skin is a precious part of our bodies. A glowing, youthful skin provides us with a confidence boost and allows us to look more presentable in public. Excessive exposure to the sun, smoking, harmful chemicals, low protein intake, genetics, and stress can all lead to premature aging. Doctor Oz reports several signs that can show you when you are aging too fast. These signs include cottonmouth in the morning, red and inflamed eyes, graying skin, loss of smell and hearing loss. While these may not all be directly associated with aging signs on the facial area, they all provide evidence that the entire body is aging too fast, which often leads to the skin to start aging too fast as well.
With millions of people struggling to fight against the signs of premature aging, a range of products has hit the market to offer assistance. The large variety of products available in the modern day to help minimize the effects of aging makes it hard to choose the best anti-aging product for a specific condition. Marketing material of these products can also make it hard to choose, especially when a list of promises is made but never delivered on. Considering the fact that some of these products can also be quite pricey, such as the Chanel Ultra Correction Lift Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15, going for an average of $150, we sometimes need to reach deep into our wallets to be able to afford such a product.
Step-By-Step Anti-Aging Skincare
When it comes to buying commercially available anti-aging serums, people often forget that these products usually work in a system. To gain optimum benefits, an array of products is required. In the end, this results in a large expense that might not even be worth the buy. Looking into alternative methods that can help you treat and prevent signs of premature aging can be an effective option. This will help you save money, while also enjoying similar benefits to what these expensive products can offer you.
Anti-Aging Skincare Tips
Before we look at the proper skin care regimen to follow to avoid premature aging of the skin, let us first take a look at some anti-aging skin care tips. We often forget how important it is to take care of our bodies to resemble a more youthful appearance on the outside. These tips can easily be implemented into your daily task list to gain the benefits and enjoy younger looking that that is radiant and “full of life”.
- Huffington Post reports that sleep deprivation has been linked to early signs of aging. If you are struggling to sleep, ask your doctor to prescribe you a mild sedative to help you fall asleep. You could also try to get into bed earlier and drink some chamomile tea before going to sleep. This will help ease your mind and relax your entire body.
- Byrdie reports that sleeping with makeup on can lead to collagen degradation and premature aging. Instead of getting into bed while still wearing makeup, take a few moments to remove the makeup with a gentle makeup remover product.
- Everyday Health reports that excessive exposure to the sun can cause premature aging signs on the skin, including wrinkles. Instead of going out when the sun is at its highest point, schedule your jogging session for early in the morning or later in the afternoon. When you need to go out into the sun while it is very hot outside, where a shade on your head to protect your face from UV rays.
Anti-Aging Skincare Regimen
When you use these tips in your daily routine, you will already be able to benefit from the advantages the tips have to offer your skin. These tips can also help avoid the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles at a premature age. Avoiding these damaging effects on the skin is much better than only taking action once they appear. Following a proper, safe and effective anti-aging skin care regimen can also be beneficial to combat the signs of aging. When using serums to treat the effects of aging on the skin, try to opt for a system such as Skin Element, which uses a multi-step system and provides complete care for the area around the eyes, the face and the neck.
- Start by washing your face with a non-soap cleanser. Use warm water while washing your face.
- Use an eye cream to treat aging effects around the eyes.
- Finish your morning routine with a moisturizer. Ensure the moisturizer has UV protection.
- In the evening, you should wash and exfoliate the skin, followed by another treatment remedy for the eyes. Use a natural anti-aging serum to treat visible signs of aging and, finally, top the regimen off with moisturizer specifically designed for night use.
A thorough, effective anti-aging skin care regimen can make a huge different on the appearance of aging effects on the skin. With several factors such as sun exposure and chemicals in facial products causing these signs to show up earlier than they should, it is vital to consider what products you are using. If the products are not effective on your skin, it may be time to switch to a better regimen.

Want radiant, glowing skin everyday? You must know by now that you can’t get away with bad habits. On the other hand, it takes a lot of hard work, commitment and dedication to achieve good things, that includes achieving great skin.
Here are 7 daily habits you want to wire into your system so that you can be always be happy waking up to beautiful skin everyday:
Habit No. 1: Make clean and clear skin your number 1 goal
If you succeed, everything else — consistently blemish-free, beautiful and ageless skin — will follow. Cleanse your face twice daily only, thrice if you sweat or if you have excessively greasy skin — no more and no less.
Over-cleansing will strip away your skin’s natural oils. It isn’t going to make your skin any less greasy either. On the contrary, because your skin will overcompensate for lost oils, you will get an even greasier skin surface. Always follow through with toner. Keep your products free of drying alcohols.
Habit No. 2: Exfoliate
Don’t let dry skin, hardened oils, dirt, makeup and other impurities build on your skin surface and clog your pores. Encourage regular skin cell renewal and turnover by exfoliating once and only up to twice weekly only.
If you need fairer skin, amping up with skin brightening cream daily may help. If hyper pigmentation, however, is a major skin issue, consider getting a Cosmelan treatment.
Habit No. 3: Eat well
Always keep in mind that what you put inside your body affects your skin in many ways because the fuel that you feed your body also fuels the processes your skin needs to keep it healthy.
The most important skin nutrients that you can get from food are antioxidants from berries and other citrus fruits, and natural anti-inflammatories from fatty fish such as sardines and tuna, avocados, and walnuts. Vitamin E from almonds will also help you achieve beautiful skin.
Habit No. 4: Exercise
If you can’t seem to get the radiant skin you’ve been targeting to achieve with a skin brightening cream, it’s probably because you haven’t been quite physically active. Fluids stuck in random places around your body can cause pigments on your skin too. This is most evident around your eyes.
Leaks resulting from poor constricted veins and poor blood circulation can leave pigments on your skin. Find time to be physically active at least, if not exercise. If you’re interested, there are also five minute exercise routines that can use to your body and skin’s advantage.
Habit No. 5: Keep your skin well protected
The top enemies of your skin that you need to conquer are UV radiation and free radicals. Don’t just pick up any sunscreen that reads “broad spectrum” and that provides long periods of SPF. You must be informed that sunscreens can be severely toxic, most especially those containing the chemical sunscreen actives like Avobenzone, Octocrylene and Octisalate. You should favor sunscreens that use only Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide which are generally safer for your skin.
Make sure you nourish your skin with high levels of antioxidants from your topical creams as well. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals which are produced by your body and which you can obtain from the environment as well. Free radicals cause skin cells to become damaged and even die. Whenever these happen, skin matrix becomes damaged.
Habit No. 6: Get enough sleep everyday
Allow your skin sufficient time to facilitate skin cell repair and renewal of skin surface. To give your skin greater support in achieving brighter skin, get a Cosmelan treatment. It is an in-office procedure that deeply treats your skin with a skin lightening formulation that excludes the potentially carcinogenic, hydroquinone.
Habit No. 7: Never sleep with your makeup on
End the day with squeaky clean skin just as you started your day with a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer.
Achieving healthy, glowing skin can be a demanding and daunting task. If you don’t start linking up your health goals with your healthy skin goals, your efforts aren’t going to get you anywhere near a healthy, glowing skin anytime soon.
