My Konjac Sponge All Natural Fiber Bamboo Charcoal Facial Sponge

Saturday, February 8th, 2014

erase4It’s not often that there are big innovations in facial cleansers. However, recently there has been a new fad with cleansing sponges made 100% pure Konjac plant root. There are plenty of brands that sell them. We tried the All Natural Fiber Bamboo Charcoal Facial Sponge by My Konjac Sponge. It also has added natural bamboo charcoal, which contains activated carbon, minerals, and anti-oxidants which combat acne-causing bacteria. Environmentalists will love that since this sponge is made of plant root, it’s 100% biodegradable. The coolest thing about this sponge is its texture. It almost feels like jell-o to the touch. Since hospitals use charcoal to draw toxins from your stomach from poisoning, it stands to reason that charcoal would be great at drawing impurities from the skin. We found that this sponge gives a great clean, and with continued use you see a reduction in blemishes in about four days. The interesting thing about the Konjac sponge is that you can use it with or without cleanser. One tester with acne found that the sponge is good for a few weeks without cleanser, but then blemishes started returning. After using cleanser on the sponge, it became effective again. Another tester with sensitive combination skin found the sponge to be perfectly gentle on the skin and a very effective cleanser but too drying to use twice a day. Once was enough. There is also no expiration date on these sponges or recommended time to use before you purchase another one. So far, we know that the sponge is good for at least a few months and counting.

Tip: Just like anything else you put on your skin, this sponge must be kept dry in between washings to keep it fresh and germ free.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche® Nail

Thursday, February 6th, 2014

erase3A lot of nail polishes claim to be long-wearing, so we were surprised when we tried L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Nail polish. It lasted twice as long as our other polishes. It also has a finish that has the same high gloss as a gel polish. Thank goodness for evolving technology because this was by far the highest quality nail polish that we’ve tried. One of our testers with thin nails didn’t quite get the whole 10 days, but still got way longer wear than usual.  Our fave color is Orange You Jealous, which looks fresh and fashionable on its own without any embellishment.

Tip: To avoid an unprofessional looking manicure, start out on each nail with a broad stroke in the center, and then use the rest on the edges. That way overflow won’t go on your skin. Your cuticles will thank you!

Living Proof Prime Style Extender

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

erase smallerIt makes sense that an actress famous for a haircut with have her own line of hair products. We tried Jennifer Aniston’s Living Proof Prime Style Extender, which is supposed to make your hair style last twice as long. But our favorite part is that it’s also supposed to repel dirt and oil so your hair stays cleaner longer. We found that Living Proof Prime Style Extender does indeed extend the life of your hairstyle. However, it didn’t do much for fighting frizz. If you live in a humid climate, you’ll have to layer this underneath a frizz serum. Keep in mind that this isn’t a firm hold, so it won’t freeze your hair in place like a hairspray would. Living Proof Prime Style Extender more so retains your hair’s texture.

Tip: When using a curling iron, make your curls last longer by pinning them with hair clips so your hair cools while still in the curl shape. Leave them in for at least 15 minutes.

CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

laWhen you have dry lips it’s nice to reach for something a little more fun than Chapstick or Carmex every once in awhile. We tried CoverGirl’s Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm which moisturizes your lips and leaves behind a little bit of color. The color also has a bit of shimmer.  This product isn’t quite heavy duty enough to deal with serious chapped lips, but it does the job for everyday use.

Tip: Are your lips really dry? Try making a homemade balm by combining one teaspoon each of honey and beeswax, several drops of tea tree and lavender oils, and the liquid from a Vitamin E capsule.

Herbal Essences Body Wash

Sunday, January 12th, 2014

erase4Rose has been a fragrance used in beauty products almost since the beginning. Herbal Essences has continued the tradition with their Happy Go Lather Body Wash, which includes rose extract. This isn’t a body wash with a bunch of complicated ingredients; it only lists rose extract on the front of the bottle. Happy Go Lather Body Wash won’t leave your skin dry, but it doesn’t leave a lot of moisture behind either. We also found that it was a very clean rinsing and loved the scent. Of course, if you don’t like the smell of roses you won’t like this body wash. But they have other body washes that we plan on trying: Body Burst, Hello Hydration, Honey I smell Good, and Totally Twisted.

See our posts about body wash here.
