Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

Sunday, December 29th, 2013

erase2Freshly applied makeup always looks fabulous. But by the end of the day it’s a different story. Urban Decay has tried to fix this with their All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. It promises to leave makeup looking just-applied for 16 hours. So you don’t have to worry about melting, cracking, fading, or settling into fine lines. So how does it work? It lowers the temperature of your makeup so extreme temperatures and humidity can’t interfere. When we first tried this spray we weren’t too excited about using a face spray. But it’s actually a fine mist so it’s not unpleasant to use. It was also a relief that the product is lightweight, so you don’t feel like you’ve added anything else to your face. The funny thing about this makeup setting spray is that you may not have realized how much your makeup dissolves during the day until you use it. We loved that our makeup looked perfect for the entire day. However, one tester with an extremely oily t-zone found that the spray didn’t prevent oil. We suggest using an oil-control primer if you have very oily skin or an oily skin. Otherwise, you don’t need a primer with this product. It’s also gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Tip: If you’re looking for other ways to make your makeup last, use creams under powders. Use liquid foundation and then finish with powder, use cream eyeshadow under powder eyeshadow, cream blush under powder blush, etc.

Féria Wild Ombré

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

erase4Dyeing your hair at home is always a huge risk. We tried Féria Wild Ombré since the brush is supposed to make the process goof proof. The process is actually fairly simple. But what’s different from regular dye kits is that it contains a bleaching powder that you add to the bottle. Be careful, because even a small amount of this powder makes spots if it comes in contact with your clothes. The brush is really easy to use and naturally makes even stripes in your hair. If you want a more subtle highlighted look, you can just do one pass per section of hair. If you want it a more dramatic look, then use it to saturate your hair strands. You’ll want to make sure you use the brush either way to control the product.  The end results are very pretty and surprisingly professional looking. However, even after leaving it on for the recommended maximum time on the box, the lightening was subtle. So you won’t quite get the dramatic look that’s on the box. We tried this with only 3 passes per section of hair with the brush, so perhaps if we saturated the strands more the Ombré would be more pronounced. The brush is amazing and would be perfect for adding lowlights or highlights with other kits, so make sure you keep it!

Benefit they’re real! Mascara

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

erase3A mascara so effective your eyelashes look like fake eyelashes? That’s what Benefit they’re real! Mascara is supposed to be deliver. The formula aims to give dramatic length and volume, curl, and long-wear. We tried it and thought it gave superb lengthening results. However, the effect was not as dramatic as the name suggests. In all, we think this is a great mascara. But at $23, it doesn’t quite work twice as well as drug store brands even though it’s twice the price. So it may be a better value to get a mascara from a brand like Maybelline or L’Oreal.

Mustela Stretch Marks Intensive Action

Monday, November 25th, 2013

erase3Unfortunately, you don’t have to be pregnant to get stretch marks. We tried Mustela’s Stretch Marks Intensive Action Cream, which retails at about $42. Though more expensive than similar products at stores like Target and Ulta, it also comes up with studies to back up their claims. 96% of expectant mothers who used Stretch Marks Intensive Action did not develop stretch marks. The formula contains nourishing oils, peptides, alpha hydroxy acid, to name just a few of the many helpful ingredients it contains. So this goes further than simply moisturizing the skin. One tester tried it on older stretch marks and found it to be really effective. Of course they didn’t make them disappear, but there was a really impressive reduction in appearance. Another tester tried it on scars that were a bit more recent and that also gave nice results.  From what we’ve seen, it does seem believable that this cream could prevent the formation of stretch marks altogether.  Now if only they could come up with a product this effective for cellulite…

Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Color

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

erase4Finally cool nail art that will work for the impatient and manicure skill challenged. Sally Hansen’s Magnetic Nail Color doesn’t require any design work at all. And it’s actually easier to use than stickers since you just brush the polish on. When you hover the magnet (included) over your polished nail, you get a really cool wavy pattern.

Tip: Put a very thin coat on first, then the 2nd coat has to be thick as the directions specify. If you don’t, the magnetic pattern won’t be as pronounced or won’t turn up at all.
