erase2Hair color isn’t good for your hair, but most of us still do it anyway! Fekkai has a line of products, Technician Color Care, that helps you keep your hair color fresh as long as possible. A unique add is that the products provide UV protection. UV rays fade your hair color, and just as the sun is damaging to your skin it also works against healthy hair. We tried the shampoo, conditioner, and luxe color masque. Even if you don’t color your hair, if your hair is dry you’ll like this line. Since colored hair tends to be dry, the Technician Color Care products seem to have extra moisturizers and are not stripping at all. And for when you really abuse your hair, the luxe color masque gives an intense conditioning. So why not use the luxe color masque? It’s a very intense conditioner, so if you have fine hair it may weigh down your hair too much for frequent use. In general, we thought these products were very gentle and nourishing for color-treated hair. But they can’t stop fading completely. If you want to keep your hair looking salon fresh every week, we suggest supplementing products like Fekkai Technician Color Care with color rinses or glosses.

Neutrogena Deep Moisture Night Cream

Friday, May 30th, 2014

erase4There aren’t many intense nighttime moisturizers that claim to relieve extreme dryness without a greasy feel. We tried Neutrogena’s Deep Moisture Night Cream, and considering the light texture, it didn’t seem like it would be enough for our tester with dry skin. On the box, it says that Deep Moisture Night Cream is clinically proven to dramatically increase skin’s moisture level in just 1 week. If you have very dry skin, this will be a unique experience for you. It’s a lighter moisturizer, but it’s just as powerful at combating dryness as a heavy cream. The more you use it, the more you’ll feel like you don’t need it. However, the first couple of days are not that impressive at all. This product really gets to work after several days of use. No more flaking and plumper skin. So in sum, if you need an immediate quick fix this product isn’t the best choice. But if you’re willing to wait a week or longer, you’ll see an amazing improvement in your skin. To see more of our posts about Neutrogena, click here.

Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper

Saturday, May 24th, 2014

erase3If you have curly hair, then you most likely have a collection of products under your sink. Companies are continually releasing new products to achieve the elusive frizz free, perfect curls. We tried Curl Keeper by Curly Hair Solutions. The fact that it’s silicone-free (a prime ingredient in fighting frizz) is interesting. But what is truly unexpected about this product is the texture. This is not a gel or a cream, it’s more like putting water on your hair. This is important to remember so you don’t pour too much on your hand. So does it provide that perfect curl with no product build up? Since it’s so light, it doesn’t weight your curls down at all. It’s also great at fighting frizz. This product would probably be better in a spray bottle, so we suggest using this as a spray to get even distribution of product. If you have very thick hair and like the weight of a strong gel to control your hair, you won’t like this product by itself. Instead, use this product for touch ups.

Tip: Traveling? Don’t take up precious space in your luggage with a huge diffuser. Get a mitt diffuser (it’s less than $5 at Sally Beauty Supply) which barely takes up any space in your bag and will fit just about any blow dryer. That way you can dry your curls properly – and save space!

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Miracle Blur

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

erase2Wrinkles. Lines. Pores. L’Oreal Revitalift Miracle Blur promises to get rid of the appearance of them all at once. So what IS this product exactly? It’s many things at once. First it has an SPF of 30, which we love about this product. Especially considering that it’s unlikely that any of us are using the sun protection we’re supposed to! But also the texture fills in your pores and lines, and then it contains ingredients that reflect light to make a blurring effect. So at the end of the day, this is a primer with sunscreen. The consistency is like a gel and cream hybrid, and of course it has a pleasant scent. Since Miracle Blur provides a matte finish, one tester with oily skin really liked it. It provides an extra layer to ensure your makeup doesn’t dissipate from the oils of your skin. It gives a general improvement in the appearance of your skin, so if you don’t like wearing makeup or if you’re going to the gym and want something more than a bare face, Miracle Blur is great to use. Since this is yet another step in skincare (Miracle Blur should be applied after moisturizer), it may be a turnoff for those who don’t want to spend more time getting ready or who don’t want too many layers of product on their skin. Our suggestion? Use it for days where you’re not wearing makeup or when you really need your makeup to be perfect and last all day.

See more of our L’Oreal posts here.

Tip: Have a problem with your makeup settling into wrinkles? Don’t bother with powder as that exacerbates the problem. Instead, use a primer, then a liquid foundation, and a makeup setting spray.

B’iota Botanicals Herbal Shampoo for Thinning Hair for Normal Dry/Hair

Monday, May 19th, 2014

erase3With the prevalence of celebrities with extensions, it’s easy to feel like your hair is too thin. B’iota Botanicals is a European brand that creates plant-based beauty products. Their BIOXSINE Series Herbal Shampoos for Thinning Hair is supposed to give stronger, thicker, fuller looking hair. The first thing we noticed about the shampoo is that it has a fairly pleasant scent. We’ve tried other products for thinning hair and although effective, the scents can be medicinal. This shampoo gives your hair a healthy, volumized look. However, if your hair tends to be on the oily side, you should know that this isn’t one of those shampoos that volumize by stripping your hair. This shampoo is best for someone who is looking for both moisture and volume. If your hair is on the frizzy side, don’t be afraid to use this shampoo. For our testers with frizzy hair, they found that by using their usual anti-frizz products after shampooing they could have the best of both worlds – thick and smooth hair. The one drawback? In terms of detangling, B’iota Botanicals Herbal Shampoo for Thinning Hair doesn’t do much.

Tip: Trying to get thicker hair with no results? Hair dye in darker colors coats your strands, giving an overall fuller look. Darker shades of brown really help. Also doing a color glaze or rinse on a regular basis will keep your hair infused with color.
