Sometimes the best products that you’ll ever use are the most obvious inventions. The new bareMINERALS Perfecting Face Brush is so neat, it begs the question, why haven’t all companies come out with brushes like this? The unique section inside the brush is what makes it great. Whatever foundation you pump into the brush stays put, instead of dripping down the brush, onto your sink, down your hand, etc. The brush is also a high quality. The bristles are soft enough that they feel great on your face, but stiff enough to retain the structure of the brush. We recommend cleaning your brushes at least once a week. However, if you’ve used some inexpensive brushes on the market, you know that the foundation causes the bristles to stiffen—leaving you with a streaky foundation look unless you clean it after every use. With the Perfecting Face Brush that doesn’t happen, so you can still wash just once a week. The one downside of this brush is also why it’s so great. Since the bristles are so dense and make it hard for the foundation to spill outside the brush, it also retains more makeup. To wash this brush, you’ll need to be thorough to ensure that all of the makeup is out. We suggest swirling the brush in your hand in soap while running it under water, then turning it upside down and running your fingers back and forth over the bristles under the water to get all the makeup out the center. At $28 this foundation brush may be more than you’re used to spending, but it’s definitely worth it.
Tip: To get a seamless look, use a circular motion to apply your foundation. You can put your concealer on first, then use the brush to blend the foundation over it.

Nowadays, there are many steps to a flawless face, primer, concealer, foundation, highlighter, bronzer, setting powder…it goes on and on. CoverGirl cuts down on some of these steps with their Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation, which is a combination of primer, concealer, and foundation. As we expected, it’s a full coverage foundation. As promised it’s also long lasting. So do you still have to wear primer and concealer? It covers well enough where you can get away with not using them. But if you have very dark undereye circles, then you may want to still reach for your concealer. Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation is not drying at all (which is typical of some long wear foundations) so it’s great for dry to normal skins. Oily skin? Be sure to set with an oil-controlling powder.
Tip: For a more natural approach with concealer, put it on first, and then it will be blended when you use your foundation.

These days, there really isn’t an excuse to have a foundation color that doesn’t match your skin. Maybelline has a line of foundation Fit Me, that not only has an extensive line of color choices, but they are designed blend in with your own skin tone. They all have a translucent base and lightweight pigment so your real skin shines through. We tried it and loved the lightweight feel and the way it blended. However, true to what Maybelline’s website states, the coverage is light to medium. If you have a lot to cover, then you’ll want to use concealer underneath. Also, this foundation is not for oily skin. Since there doesn’t seem to be any mattifying properties, those with oily skin will only get a few hours of good wear from this foundation.

The problem with most of the long wear foundations that we’ve tried is that they’re drying, so they’re not suitable for everyday use. We tried Bobbi Brown’s new long-wear even finish foundation and didn’t see dry skin, even after 3 weeks of daily use. What’s really surprising is that this product contains glycerin and shea butter for moisture but retains a lightweight feel. Retailing at around $58, it also contains vitamins C and E and an SPF of 15. However, most experts claim that you would have to wear an unnatural amount of foundation to get the SPF benefit claimed on makeup. The coverage is great, the makeup lasts, and there’s a great selection of colors. However, if you’d like even more coverage and marathon wear that withstands heat and humidity, we still think Estee Lauder’s Double Wear is the best for special occasions (it’s too drying for everyday).

After seeing Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup profiled in Allure Magazine as a truly innovative product, we decided to give it a try. This foundation is different since it’s water and powder-free, and uses an oil-pigment suspension that perfects the complexion. The result? A highly thin film that corrects imperfections without buildup. When we used the product we couldn’t believe how wonderful the finish was. It doesn’t go on heavy and perfects your complexion, but it doesn’t actually look like you have makeup on. We assumed from the product description that this would be a full coverage foundation, but after using it discovered it was more so medium coverage. At $62 Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup is not cheap but we appreciated the technology behind it enough to justify the price. In the end, we loved the way this made our skin look but don’t think it’s good for those looking for heavy coverage or oil-control.
