This time, we tried Maybelline’s Volum’ Express the Colossal Mascara. This promises to give 9x the volume instantly with one coat. We found one coat to be enough for day, and we were surprised to see that we got a more natural look. With a name like ‘Volum’ Express the Colossal’ you might expect a more false lash look, but this is not a high drama mascara. As promised it went on clump free (which can be an issue with volumizing mascara). In our opinion, this gives the same effect as their Great Lash Mascara. But we liked that the Volum’ Express is collagen enriched – excellent for your lashes. To see other mascaras we’ve reviewed click here.

Tip: Mascara also works great as liquid eyeliner. Buy a slim eyeliner brush such as the e.l.f Studio Angled Eyeliner Brush and insert it in your mascara tube. It’s just $3.00 and you can use it to turn all of your mascaras into double-duty products!

Williams marketed his sister’s recipe for makeup in Chicago. His sister Maybel used petroleum jelly mixed with coal dust to make eyelashes look more dramatic. Williams adapted the formula in a laboratory and produced a product sold locally called Lash-Brow-Ine, which became a local hit. In search of a catchier name, Williams renamed the product Maybelline, which is a combination of Maybel and Vaseline.

In 1915, the company Maybelline was founded as a mail order company. In 1917, Williams’ company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara which was the first compact mascara and was very popular. By 1920, Maybelline began to sell eyeshadows. In the 1930’s new lines were added to their product mix including eyeliners. By 1932 Maybelline shed the mail order business model and began to sell products in stores, making them more accessible to customers than ever. For the next 30 years Maybelline was very successful, and in the early 1960’s introduced Ultra Lash – a revolutionary product that was the first mascara to be dispensed in a tube with a waterproof formula.

In 1967 Williams sold Maybelline to Plough, Inc. (now Schering-Plough) in Memphis, TN. As a result, the company moved from Chicago to Memphis. In 1975, the company moved again to Little Rock, AK. In 1990, Schering Plough sold Maybelline to New York investment firm Wasserstein Perella. In 1996 company headquarters moved to New York. “Maybe She’s Born With It” became Maybelline’s advertising slogan in 1991. The company was purchased by L’Oreal in 1996 and now also sells lipsticks, nail polish, and foundations.

We thought the same thing would happen with Maybelline’s Express Finish 50 Second Nail Color but it actually lasted for days! We loved that it was quick drying, however when we did our regular 2 coats it certainly took longer than 50 seconds to dry. We tried a neutral color first, next we will try a darker color to see if we can still get days of chip-free color.

Step 2 says to “Glide brush in small strokes across lash line”. We tried that technique instead of doing one solid line and we were able to replicate the winged eyeliner in the picture perfectly. This gel eyeliner comes with the brush that you need to line your eyes, and it’s both smudgeproof and waterproof. We would suggest this product if you would like a really intense look. If you like your eyeliner to be more subtle or would like a finer line, we suggest Maybelline’s Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner.

A great way to get this look is to use Maybelline’s Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner. A word of warning, this is an eyeliner that requires more skill than most. If you have a hard time doing perfect lines, we suggest using a smudge brush to even it out. We liked that this eyeliner went on smooth and didn’t dry faster than we could fix mistakes, as is the case with a lot of liquid eyeliners.

It’s really not an easy look to do. Maybelline took the guess work out of the smoky eye look with a quad (200 smokes) of easily blendable shadows that are marked with where you put the colors. Our biggest problem with inexpensive shadows is that the color goes on unevenly, making your eye look more so injured than smoky. However, what we loved the most was the quality of these shadows, even the darkest color went on evenly and blended well. With this we were able to achieve model worthy eye shadow looks in no time!

We all have a favorite beauty tip … maybe it is something passed on from your mom or your best friend. Or, maybe you are a professional makeup artist. Please share your BEST beauty tip with all us beauty-addicts.

Here is our favorite tip this week:

So we all know that we’re supposed to get a fresh mascara every 3 months…but for those of us who stubbornly hold on to old tubes we have the secret to making it last. When it starts getting all clumpy and thick, try placing the tube in some warm water to get the product liquefied again. Our favorite mascara of the moment is Maybelline’s Lash Stilleto. You get beautiful results, but it also conditions lashes so they just get better with time!

We liked Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Concealer because it hid our dark circles completely, but since it’s oil, talc, and fragrance free, we could use it on other imperfections. Now we don’t need two concealers- we can see why this product won beauty awards from Oprah Magazine and Marie Claire.
