Weleda Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

erase3Have you ever heard of anthroposophy? We definitely hadn’t until we read about Weleda’s company history, which started in 1921. Anthroposophy encourages people to see their minds and spirits as intrinsically linked to the world. Weleda was established with this in mind—to use natural ingredients that can holistically work with and support the body’s healing tendencies. Many assume that an appreciation for natural product is fairly recent, but apparently it’s been around for quite a long time! Another fun fact: Weleda is named after the Celtic goddess of wisdom and healing. We tried Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion, which is 100% natural and 97% organic. It contains fatty acids (great for dry skin), vitamin-rich oil from organic sea buckthorn, mallow extract, and shea butter. What we noticed first was the strong and long-lasting citrusy smell that lasts for hours. If you like citrus scents then you’ll love this lotion. The lotion isn’t very thick, but moisturizes and absorbs very well. If you have super dry skin this won’t be enough. But for everyone else, it’s a great lotion to use and of course you get the peace of mind that you’re not putting chemicals on your skin.

My Konjac Sponge All Natural Fiber Bamboo Charcoal Facial Sponge

Saturday, February 8th, 2014

erase4It’s not often that there are big innovations in facial cleansers. However, recently there has been a new fad with cleansing sponges made 100% pure Konjac plant root. There are plenty of brands that sell them. We tried the All Natural Fiber Bamboo Charcoal Facial Sponge by My Konjac Sponge. It also has added natural bamboo charcoal, which contains activated carbon, minerals, and anti-oxidants which combat acne-causing bacteria. Environmentalists will love that since this sponge is made of plant root, it’s 100% biodegradable. The coolest thing about this sponge is its texture. It almost feels like jell-o to the touch. Since hospitals use charcoal to draw toxins from your stomach from poisoning, it stands to reason that charcoal would be great at drawing impurities from the skin. We found that this sponge gives a great clean, and with continued use you see a reduction in blemishes in about four days. The interesting thing about the Konjac sponge is that you can use it with or without cleanser. One tester with acne found that the sponge is good for a few weeks without cleanser, but then blemishes started returning. After using cleanser on the sponge, it became effective again. Another tester with sensitive combination skin found the sponge to be perfectly gentle on the skin and a very effective cleanser but too drying to use twice a day. Once was enough. There is also no expiration date on these sponges or recommended time to use before you purchase another one. So far, we know that the sponge is good for at least a few months and counting.

Tip: Just like anything else you put on your skin, this sponge must be kept dry in between washings to keep it fresh and germ free.

Nuance Salma Hayek AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream

Saturday, October 19th, 2013

erase2 We appreciate that Salma Hayek’s beauty product line, Nuance, contains natural ingredients. The latest product we tried is the AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream. This contains tepezcohuite, which is a type of tree that ancient Mayans sourced for skin treatment. The upside of this cream is that it’s only $5, but the downside at only .265 oz, this will be the smallest container in your beauty cabinet. We actually liked the size since it’s not very sanitary to dip your fingers in a container of moisturizer for months on end. Our verdict is that this product works as well as pricier products in the anti-age arena. Hydration wise, this works well enough and is not very greasy. If you have extremely dry skin you may need more moisture.

Tip: If your skin needs more moisture than your favorite anti-age cream provides, try layering with a skin oil. For example Bio-Oil works well in conjunction with other products.

Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss

Monday, May 27th, 2013

laMany lip glosses seem to be the same but we tried Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss since it’s made with natural ingredients. The color goes on very sheer, so anyone can wear even their darkest shades. We found that a great use for this lip gloss is to go under any long wear lipsticks that are drying. It’s lightweight enough that you’ll feel comfortable laying underneath other products. This lip gloss is made of natural ingredients but also looks very natural in color on. We tried the evening glow shade and liked that it added color but still looked natural. Burt’s Bees lip gloss is more for moisturizing, so you can’t wear it by itself for noticeable color.

Seventh Generation Lavender Moisturizing Lotion

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

erase2If you like natural products you’re probably already familiar with the Seventh Generation brand, which now has personal care products. We tried their Lavender Moisturizing Lotion which is 95% plant based. This lotion has a nice consistency and moisturizes well. If you apply a lot it can feel a bit heavy, but we love the idea of using a moisturizer without all the chemicals.
