Dr. Mercola – Body Lotion and Body Wash

Saturday, July 26th, 2014

erase4There is a growing movement for all-natural products—and as more companies address it the quality of what’s out there improves all the time. We tried a lotion and a body wash from Dr. Mercola, which is a brand that offers all natural products. The thought behind the products makes sense, since our skin is our largest organ, it doesn’t make sense to put products on it that we wouldn’t want to ingest.

Dr. Mercola Organic Body Lotion Unscented – if you’re used to using regular body lotions, this one will be a real adjustment. Even unscented products have a masking fragrance, so with an unscented organic body lotion it’s a different scent all together. All you smell is a faint trace of the ingredients – chamomile, green tea leaf extract, shea butter, jojoba seed oil, and aloe vera. The lotion feels a bit sticky when you apply it – most likely because of the aloe vera. However, it absorbs pretty quickly and does just as good of a job at moisturizing as regular lotions. Which begs the question, why do personal care products have to have so many chemicals? If you have super dry skin, Dr. Mercola also offers a body butter.

Dr. Mercola Fresh Scent Body Wash – of the two products we tried, this is our favorite. You have it all with this product, the pleasing scent, effectiveness, and organic. The scent is great, but this is a light scent and isn’t as strong as your typical body wash. The wash contains aloe, macadamia nut oil, and shea butter. Those with dry or sensitive skin will be thrilled with how this body wash doesn’t strip the skin at all. The only downside is that you only get a little bit of lather, so you may go through this wash a bit quicker.

Vaseline Total Moisture® Spray & Go Moisturizer

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

eraseThere are now products that have copied the concept, but when Vaseline Total Moisture Spray & Go Moisturizer first came out it seemed like the neatest product in the world. We tried this new lotion, which is sprayed on and is absorbed in seconds. Since spray on sunblocks can be sticky, we expected this to be sticky too but it actually wasn’t. Another surprise was the way it sprayed. It seemed like this lotion might be annoying to use and get the bathroom floor covered with lotion. However, this has a direct stream so you more so spray a very thick line down your legs and arms and rub it in. Another assumption that you may make about this lotion is that since it’s a spray it won’t moisturize that well. This lotion is more lightweight since it’s sprayed on, so if you’re into thick lotions you’ll find it too watery. But the good news is that it does a decent job and is about on the level of a regular lotion for normal skin. All in all, if you’re in a rush or don’t have very dry skin you’ll love this product. If you do have very dry skin, you might like this product as a touch up lotion to use throughout the day.

Tip: Did you know your skin is the largest organ of your body? Keep it healthy from the inside out by eating Vitamins B and C, eggs, milk, carrots, mango, kale, and pumpkin.

Nivea Smooth Sensation Body Lotion

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

erase3We think any lotion with shea butter is worth trying. Nivea Smooth Sensation Body Lotion contains shea butter and something they call Hydra IQ Technology, which is said to support the skin’s hydration network. Considering it has shea butter, the lotion is lighter than we expected. This is a great if you don’t like greasy lotions, but is a con if you have extremely dry skin and need a thick lotion. On a tester with dry skin, this product worked great. It also has a long-lasting scent, which is something Nivea doesn’t mention. It’s a pleasant, light scent, but it lasts all day.

Tip: Want to get the most out of your lotion?. Before you get in the shower, exfoliate dry skin with a homemade body scrub mixture with half a grated cucumber, 2 tablespoons of salt, and 1 cup of full-fat plain yogurt.

Carmex Healing Lotion

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Since Carmex makes such an excellent lip balm, we expected their new healing lotion to be just as effective. We tested it on sunburned, peeling skin to really put it to the test. After exfoliating then using it, no more flaking! We found Carmex Healing Lotion to be extremely effective and worthy of being in the same product line as their lip balm. The formula contains aloe and vitamin E as well as a skin protectant (Allantoin). Since the lotion worked so well it made us question why all lotions don’t have Vitamin E and aloe. The scent is more unisex and is reminiscent of cocoa butter. If you’re into fragranced lotion you may not like the scent, but you’ll at least like how it works.

Suave Cucumber Melon Body Lotion

Saturday, June 8th, 2013

erase3Since we’re huge fans of Bath & Body Works lotion, we tried Suave’s interpretation of Cucumber Melon.  Suave’s Cucumber Melon lotion delivers on its promise of ease of absorption and long lasting fragrance. The drawback is that you don’t get the same moisturizing as you do with Bath & Body Works. Their formula contains shea butter and vitamins – Suave’s does not. The verdict? This product is a great lightweight lotion, but it’s not moisturizing enough for dry skin.

Tip: Do you have skin that’s so dry it’s flaking? It may be a light sunburn. Makes sure your using sunscreen or at least use a lotion with an SPF and see if it helps.
